About TVM

The Village Markets (TVM), founded in October 2008, began with a humble nine stalls on the oval at Burleigh Heads State School on the Gold Coast.

The event which was created to fill a gap and provide a platform for talented emerging fashion designers, artists, photographers and vintage collectors to showcase their wares, is fast becoming a favourite regular cultural event for the South East QLD region.

The Village Markets now trade on the first and third Sunday of every month from 8am – 1pm.

TVM was the fist fashion focused market to be created on the Gold Coast and has grown to become a much needed cultural hub showcasing 50 stalls per market day as well as live local music.

The Village Markets are a;

  • unique, open air fashion, art and designer market
  • creative hub of emerging fashion designers, artists and collectors of vintage fashion & accessories
  • community focused event, retailing quality hand-crafted products
  • market committed to supporting young and emerging designers, artists and artisans
  • start up for creative businesses, promoting development of key business skills and contacts
  • showcase for new ideas and contemporary art, fashion and design
  • meeting place for local residents and friends and visitors
  • cultural blend of Gold Coast stylers, hipsters, students, artists, urban professionals, and more
  • interesting and fun place to explore and mingle
  • market where customers can engage directly with the maker of a product/artwork
  • perfect place to pick up a one of piece or a unique gift.

The key aim of The Village Markets is to promote local business and put the Gold Coast on the map for young and emerging designers and artists, all whilst being a fashion destination where every shopper can create their own individual style.

At each Village Markets you can expect to find a diverse range of stalls from men’s and women’s fashion by emerging and local designers, vintage clothing sourced from around the world and one off, high quality jumble stalls. You’ll also find amongst the fashion stalls various local artworks, hand crafted jewellery and unique homewares.

BACKGROUND

When visiting any major city it is easy to find a network of local businesses, created from up and coming designers, artists, musicians, foodies and collectors. Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane play host to several ‘market’ events where local talent and small businesses can showcase their works, yet the Gold Coast lacked such an event.

The Gold Coast was looking for an event where like-minded individuals and partnerships can showcase their work, network with other small business owners and most importantly sell their goods. There were several Art and Craft markets on the Gold Coast, but nothing that catered for the younger generation, the 18 to 34 year olds, that make up 17.5% of the Gold Coast population.

The lack of cultural and community events on the Gold Coast prompted the creation of The Village Markets, a non-funded, alcohol free, community focused event. The markets reflect the concepts of other more established markets such as Bondi Markets, Paddington Markets and London’s Portobello Road Markets, both known throughout the world for serving as launching pads for some of the most successful young creative talents in recent years.

EVENT MANAGERS

The Village Markets is co-managed by Marissa Bowden and Sarah Schoeller. As locals, Marissa and Sarah have seen first hand the lack of cultural, community events on the Gold Coast and as proud Coasters can’t wait to see the work of local designers, in particular the fashion industry, showcased to the community. Together with their extensive marketing and communications experience, the duo have created an event that has seen Gold Coast fashion attract national media recognition.

Community Involvement – Burleigh Heads State School

The Village Markets owes part of it’s success to the wonderful support of Burleigh Heads State School. Having been knocked back by for sites, the School jumped on board and got behind the markets from day one.

We’re privileged to have found such a supportive team, including Peter Tong (School Principal), a great administration team and the School’s P&C.

The Village Markets makes a monthly contribution to the School for use of the oval and the School P&C hold regular sausage sizzles each market day.
