It’s amazing how fast two months can go! That’s how long I have been interning at The Village Markets and it has now (sadly) come to an end. I have learnt so much and had a lot of fun along the way (not to mention my wardrobe is now a little fuller!) From my first poster run to walking around the markets with a camera and note-pad in hand, I have gained some extremely valuable experience.

I would like to thank everyone who I met during my time interning at TVM. A special thanks goes out to Marissa and Sarah for giving me this opportunity and allowing me into their TVM world.

If there’s one thing that I’ve learnt from this internship is that you have to be passionate about what you do. Everyone at TVM is always so enthusiastic and excited each market day, it is infectious! Also, seeing the emerging fashions that are coming out of the Gold Coast is so exciting to witness. I can’t wait to see what the next few years will bring!

Below are some photos that I compiled from my time at TVM! Hope you enjoy!

It was my last day interning at The Village Markets and my, what a day it was! With the sun shining, music playing and shoppers galore, the stage (or rather oval) was set for a great day. With lots of stalls to choose from, I had fun exploring through the wide range of emerging designer clothing, vintage wears, jewellery and homewares, as well as chatting with the stall holders. Here are my final five fave finds! Enjoy!

1. Seven Blueberries

One of the first stalls that caught my eye was Seven Blueberries. With its whimsical jewellery and adorable trinkets, it’s extremely easy to get lost in this stall. I absolutely love these cute-as-a-button miniature teacup necklaces! These are also much loved by TVM customers and always sell out quickly on market days. Made from porcelain and exhibiting a variety of designs and sizes, they are perfect for the tea lover (I am one myself!)

Each teacup pendent is threaded through an antique gold chain, in both long and short lengths. Reasonably priced at only $20 each, these won’t be here for long! Teacup bobby pins are also available for $15. I bought one of these and I absolutely love it! Why don’t you get the girls around for a little tea party? Seven Blueberries style!

2. Lemon Canary

It was Lemon Canary’s first time at TVM and their divine candles were certainly that! All are hand-made soy essential oil candles with cotton wicks with various scents available. From wax melts to oil burners and vintage jars, there is something for the eco-friendly candle lover.

As much as I love the candles, my fave find at Lemon Canary is actually these cute little inspiration tags. Made from ceramic, with a wide range of sayings available, there’ll be one that resonates with you! Priced on size, with small $2.95, medium $4.95 and large $7.95 respectively. These tags are also used on the vintage jars and for gift wrapping. Also, thank-you to Jasmine, the inspiration behind Lemon Canary, for kindly giving me a candle to burn as I wrote this post! It smells wonderful and is getting my creative juices flowing!

3. Lou-est

It was only her second time at TVM but Lou-est definitely looked at home amongst the TVM family. I love the range of pocket tops which are perfect for hot summer days (they are finally here, hooray!) With a range of patterns and colours, most are 100% cotton. Jess, the designer of Lou-est, designs each garment and a local dressmaker constructs them.

Known for their versatile designs and funky fabrics, Jess’s idea is to create basic designs which everyone loves but to produce them in a wide range of colours and patterns. She wants her customers have a variety to choose from and from what I saw, they certainly do! I love this idea and as I couldn’t choose just one pattern, I have chosen the entire range as one of my five fave finds. At an affordable $35 each, you are sure to find one for you!

4. Lilac Skin

It’s extremely hard to miss Lilac Skin’s stall! With the colour, brightness and gorgeous items, I always feel instantly attracted and happy. I was keen to see the new kimono’s which were making their debut at TVM and they certainly didn’t disappoint! Made from an authentic vintage traditional kimono pattern, it has been completely unchanged except for the fabric used.

The new range of cotton kimonos come in a variety of colours and patterns and are priced at $50. They can be worn like a traditional kimono as they also come with a tie belt. If you like to be a little more subtle with your style, the kimono can be dressed down as a jacket or can even be worn around the house as a robe. The possibilities are endless!

5. Long Way Home

If you’re looking to hop on the colour blocking bandwagon but don’t want to go too over the top, then this tie-up crop if perfect for you! This particular piece is priced at $30. Made from a sheer lightweight polyester and exhibiting a sweet front pocket, it is part of the new spring/summer range. It is ideal for throwing on over your bikinis or whilst having a bit of shop (at TVM of course!)

With recreated vintage pieces and unique hand-made creations, Long Way Home has a variety of cute clothes ranging from dresses and skirts to shorts and tops. Each item is a one-off which means that you will be wearing a completely unique design. There is a distinctive summer holiday feel about the clothing, which does make me feel like I’m a Long Way Home!

The sun was shining, with laughter and good vibes aplenty as I arrived to another fantastic day at The Village Markets! There was cause to celebrate as it was TVMs third birthday (congratulations ladies!) and the day showed that they’re stronger than ever. With an abundant range of new stalls and talent to browse through, I took my time searching for my five fave finds. I even had the help of some of my best friends (thanks girls!), so without further ado, here they are!

1. Amilita

It was Amilita’s first time at TVM and my was she a crowd pleaser! With a range of beautiful clothes including dresses, tops, skirts, shorts and accessories, her stall was always busy. Created by the very talented Sara, her garments express individuality and femininity for every woman. It was hard to choose just one garment from her new summer collection. After much deliberation (browsing through the racks of gorgeous garments!), I eventually went with The Shima Maxi.

This dress is handcrafted and dyed in Bali with an asymmetrical hemline and scalloping edging around the bodice, back and hemline. Made from fugette material, it can easily take you from day to night. Priced at $99 and available in camel, pale peach and black. The necklaces are also available for $65 with a range of different styles and 10% of the sale going towards a charity to help the street people of India. I know what I’ll be saving up for next market day!

2. Erin Hassall

Looking for that perfect dress for the races? Want to wear something that is on trend yet unique as well? Look no further than Erin Hassall’s maxi parachute dress! The gorgeous colours and print take colour blocking to a whole new level. Only her second time at TVM, Erin Hassall hand-makes all of her garments right here in Australia.

The dress is made from a beautiful lightweight silk fabric and features an asymmetrical hemline. Available for $99, you will be able to wear this exquisite piece again and again. Erin also makes the necklaces shown in the photo. Priced at $50, they exhibit an eclectic mix of beading, ribbons and fabric sewn into the shapes of flowers. The perfect accessory for this dress, get in quickly before it all races away!

3. Bluebird Designs

Another newcomer to the TVM family is Bluebird. Specialising in a range of jumpsuits, this stall has everything for the jumpsuit lover (I must say I am definitely one!) With the majority of items being made just south of the border in Banora Point and others being made in Bali, you can be assured that they are of the most highest quality.

I particularly love the range of Dove short leg, colourful jumpsuits. They are the perfect garment to take you from the beach to your local cafe. Made from a soft and lightweight viscose material, these cute jumpsuits are available in a range of colours and patterns. Priced at $69, I can’t wait to see them at the next TVM on the 6th of November!

4. Soy Chai Latte

I instantly fell in love with this cute tea set that are actually candles! The ‘All That Glitters’ range features teacups with saucers, a teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl all in a rustic gold finish. Organic soy wax is poured into the cups to create the candles. This particular one was French pear scented (absolutely divine if I do say so myself!) Reminiscent of years gone by, these preloved beauties now take on a whole new life.

The vintage tea set was found in an antique store in Coolangatta, with all ranges being hand-sourced from various locations. This one is $15 for each piece or $70 for the entire set. The stall also has a range of other candles in tea cups and jars, all using organic soy wax in various scents. These include sugar cookie, crème caramel, cinnamon chai tea, sweet pea vanilla, cranberry and mandarin, ripe raspberry, peach preserve and honeysuckle jasmine. They are a must to check out!

5. Archers of Grace

As you walk around TVM one trend that is prominent is that of feathers (they seemed to be everywhere on Sunday!) One of my favourite feather designs is Archers of Grace’s feather swing dress. It is one of her best selling garments and it features a digital print of feathers that look like they are floating in the breeze. All prints are self-designed and she is also now going into tie-dyeing.

Made from organic cotton and manufactured locally in the Gold Coast and Byron area, it is extremely comfortable, good for the environment and reasonably priced at $75 (could you ask for anything more!?) It also comes with a tie belt and can be worn as a dress at the beach or as a T-shirt tucked into cropped shorts. Right on trend! Don’t take this trend feather-lightly (please excuse the pun), and get into it right now!

Another fantastic day at The Village Markets saw a wonderful array of emerging designers, jumble sales and accessories and homewares to boot! Although the wind did play a bit of havoc, stall holders and customers alike were not put off and came out in force. Once again, I went exploring through TVM to discover new and exciting items that caught my eye. Although it was hard to narrow down, here are my five favourite finds for the day!

1. lola & maree

Since starting my internship I have continuously visited the lola & maree stall. With beautiful, feminine silhouettes and an eye for detail, Lauren hand-makes all of her amazing garments. Prided on her unique and one-off designs, each piece is made from either vintage or recycled materials.

Available in a range of colours, from cute floral prints to bright block colours and colourful stripes, the new ‘lulu’ dress is a must have! Made from vintage silk chiffon fabric and lace, this lightweight fabric is perfect for the hot summer days ahead. Priced at $45, these one-off creations are an absolute steal. Grab one soon before they run out!

2. Neverland

The cute, whimsical designs at Neverland look like they are straight out of a fairytale. Feminine dresses that are right on trend, yet unique as well? Yes please! At the moment I am loving the range of patchwork dresses which feature a collection of patchwork circles on the bodice and a ruffle hem.

Although they come in a variety of colours, this one particularly caught my eye due to the colours and the soft fabric flowing in the breeze. (As you can see the dress didn’t want to stay still for the photo!) All of the designs are hand-made and the circle patchwork is made from a variety of vintage fabrics. Priced at $60, you can have your own piece of Neverland and you’ll feel like you’ve just emerged from the rabbit hole!

3. Jane Orman Designs

It was Jane Orman Designs first time at TVM and she definitely didn’t disappoint. All the way up from Tamworth, Jane brought her talented creations to the Gold Coast to add a bit of sophistication to the day. All of her works of art are oil paintings and Jane bases her muse around the modern woman. With an edgy yet feminine feel about them, they would transform or create a focal point in your favourite room.

I especially loved the beautiful painting of this woman (I wish my student budget enabled me to buy this artwork!) Jane also has a range of tops and accessories at her stall to satisfy the savviest of market shoppers. I saw that a few lucky TVM shoppers took home some of her incredible designs. Hope they look great in your homes!

4. Attic Collection

Walk into Attic’s stall and you feel like you’ve been transported back in time. From antique hair brushes to unique ornaments and jewellery, this stall has everything for the vintage collector. Most of the stock dates back to the 1960s and 1970s and each piece has a history. This makes it that little more special knowing that you have bought an item which was loved by someone else.

It was extremely hard to choose just one item! In the end I couldn’t, so I ended up going with a theme. These gorgeously cute deer’s were reminiscent of my childhood with cute Disney character references to Bambi (oh how I loved that movie!). These ornaments range from $10-$15, with the rest of the stall also being reasonably priced. I even bought one of the deer’s and it is now sitting proudly on my bookshelf!

5. Faith Designs

With the sunshine reflecting off the crystal stones and the gorgeous colours glittering away, you can’t help but immediately be drawn into the stall. (I have always loved crystal stones, maybe this has something to do with my name!) With a range of necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings, there is jewellery to suit every woman.

I was immediately drawn to the new Agate Cuffs. With a range of beautiful colours to choose from, agate slices are clasped onto these funky looking cuffs (perfect statement pieces anyone?!). Available on either plain or calligraphy inspired cuffs, in both gold and silver. All pieces are reasonably priced with the Agate Cuffs priced at $15.

The Village Markets on September 18, 2011 had a relaxed vibe from the very start. As my first official TVM as an intern, I was excited to meet the stall holders and see the merchandise everyone was selling. The (extremely) hot spring day was welcomed as TVM shoppers browsed through bikinis, dresses, shorts and skirts as well as a range of accessories and homewares.

Everyone I spoke to was very friendly and informative about their products. It was difficult narrowing down my 5 Fave Finds, but here they are. Enjoy!

1. Sisterhood Sewing

Walk past Sisterhood Sewing and you cannot help but notice all of the eyes looking at you. These eyes belong to the wide range of adorable owls peering out from the stall. I have not picked out just one owl as my favourite (I am personally obsessed with owls so I would find this task extremely difficult!). Rather, I have chosen the entire stall as one of my 5 Fave Finds.

Using a range of various fabrics, including vintage wool from op shops and Ralph Lauren swatches, these hand-made cuties also help to raise money. With a $1,000 of revenue per year going towards a desired charity, the money raised this year will be going towards Teen Challenge. Ranging from $15 to $40, TVM customers can also enjoy paying wholesale prices when buying at the markets.

2. Lokoa

Cut-out detailing? Check. Fringing? Check. Available in a number of colours? Check. Made from beautiful, soft leather, the new Amazonia Vests from Lokoa tick all the boxes. With a modern western feel, this garment would look perfect teamed with a pair of denim shorts and a bikini top on a hot summer’s day! (Staple festival outfits anyone?)

Priced at $140 and available in Mad Mustard, Urban Rustic, Olive, Cinnamon, Beige and Peach, you will be sure to find one that suits you.

3. Jewellery by Kim

The hand-made ceramic jewellery pieces at Jewellery by Kim are unique and beautiful! The new ‘Love and Late Nights Collection’ especially caught my eye and was created through a lot of love and a lot of late nights (when you speak to Kim you notice straight away how much she loves what she does!). With a mixture of hearts and crosses, some designs are imprinted with antique lace, whereas others showcase roses and beautiful sayings.

Said to be jewellery for your home, most pieces are one offs and would create a talking point in any room. The ‘Love and Late Nights Collection’ is priced at $60, with other pieces in the stall available at various prices. Kim is also about to branch out into little ceramic tiles with famous inspirational and fashion quotes written on them. Watch this space!

4. Qui Qui

Every time I passed this stall I could not help but look at the beautiful maxi dress on one of the mannequins. The rustic colour and rope detailing (two trends which were very prominent at TVM!), gives a desert meets nautical feel. Made from crushed satin, this lightweight fabric is perfect for a day out with the girls or on hot summer nights cruising along the Broadwater. Priced at $129, this hand-made maxi is a steal!

Qui Qui originally started out with all garments being hand-made. Now that it has grown, some garments are being manufactured in China which means some cheaper prices for TVM customers. What is even more exciting is that Dissh has taken up some of the made in China garments! Congratulations Qui Qui!

5. Myrtle and Dove

Last but definitely not least, I could not go past the Retro Denim Dresses with vintage fabric pockets from Myrtle and Dove. The first thing I noticed about these dresses was the unique fabrics used to make the pockets. Period fabrics are used ranging from the 1940s to the 1970s! The same fabric is also used on the neckline to create continuity with the design.

I love how these dresses are a little bit unique and as they are hand-made, it makes them just that bit more special! If you are really after a vintage buy, then these dresses are perfect for you, priced at $89. There are many other cute designs at this stall, including skirts with pockets made from vintage tapestries! Oh so cute!
